Chapter 30 Competition and appointment

Spring has arrived, but there is still a bit of chill around us.

After being stationed in Tyniec for half a month, the new recruits of the patrol team ushered in the training competition. In the open space of the military camp square stood a neat row of soldiers wearing black robes and capes, holding wooden shields in their left hands and short spears in their right hands; Odo and the other three stood behind the three soldiers they trained, and Ron stood beside the soldiers he trained.

The square was surrounded by a circle of Tinets city guards and idle citizens who came to watch.

"It's really powerful." The crowd of onlookers sighed with emotion.

A man in the crowd who looked like an officer with his arms crossed said sourly, "You train like animals every day, it's strange that you can't stand up well." But although this officer hated these guys who trained like animals all day long, he had to admit that they gained momentum as soon as they stood there, which was different from his own city guards who stood crookedly.

Matt ignored the crowd watching from a distance. He stared at the soldiers in front of him and said loudly: "You have been training for half a month, and today I am going to see your results. The competition is divided into three parts, the first is a contradictory one-line formation, the second is a three-person battle formation, and the third is a three-person battle formation. Three individual combat skills. The first two items are compared between three combat groups, and the third item is a battle between soldiers. The winner of the first two items will be rewarded with half a barrel of beer, and the winner of the third item will be rewarded with five Fenni copper coins. "

"Now let's start the first item, Contradictory Line."

"Listen to my order - form a formation!"

  Roar!

The crowd shouted loudly, raised their shields to chest level, raised their short spears, looked straight ahead, bent their left legs, kicked back half a step with their right legs, and leaned slightly forward.

Matt glanced from left to right. Everyone's movements were basically uniform. The first group trained by Odo was the most standardized, while the young soldier trained by Ron was a little flustered, with his hands and feet shaking slightly.

"Defend against arrows!" Art then shouted the second order.

The three combat groups each contracted, with the middle person as the center of the horizontal formation. The two on the left and right retracted in front of and behind them respectively. One crouched down and held the shield leg guard, and the other tilted back and raised the shield to protect the head; Ron's formation was missing the round shield of the leg guard.

Matt stepped forward and checked the defensive formations of the four combat groups in turn. Although they all completed the basic movements, some of the gaps between the three round shields were too large, and some of the three people were not in a line, causing their bodies to be exposed to the protection of the round shields.

  "Forward!"

"Ho! Roar! Roar!" Everyone kept holding their shields and spears, roared three times, and took three steps forward.

Ron, who was on the far right, glanced at Jason, who was lagging behind because he took too small a step, with his peripheral vision, and he had already scolded him ten thousand times in his heart.

   「Attack!」

"Ho ho ho!" Everyone kept their postures unchanged, and stabbed forward three times with their short spears held flat.

Ate walked to the Odo people who were standing behind and watched, and said: "The first competition is over. The first and second groups of recruits moved more neatly, but the formation of the first group was tighter. The first group of recruits won the first competition."

At ordered all the soldiers to return to their original positions.

"The next step is to move on to the second item, a three-person battle formation."

“The first group will face off against the third group, and the second group will face off against the guard group. The two winning groups will then play against each other. If the main attacker is hit, the loser will be the loser. I will join the guard group.” Art took a log shield and long stick from Odo, and stood on Ron’s right side as an assister.

Odo's first group and Kazak's third group began a three-person battle. The short spears in the hands of the soldiers were replaced by long sticks with white ash on the end.

Huntuba is the main attacker of the first group. He holds the shield in front, the long wooden stick in his hand points directly at the opponent's battle formation, and his eyes are fixed on the main attacker on the opposite side. The two assistants beside Tuba held shields to protect the left and right.

Hearing the attack order from Chief Odo, Tuba took the lead and rushed towards the opponent's battle formation. In a blink of an eye, the two battle formations collided and became stalemate. Seeing that his own battle formation was beginning to be pushed back, Tuba pushed forward with all his strength. The opponent took half a step back, revealing a gap. Tuba found the right moment and drove the wooden stick through the gap...

On the other side, the guard group joined by Art was also fighting against the second group. During this time, Art was busy making friends with some of the powerful people in Tyniec City, such as the city guard captain, the weapons depot manager, the grain storekeeper, and the agricultural officer. He tried every means to obtain farm tools, seeds, and weapons and supplies for the wooden castle and patrol team. He also had to supervise and guide the training of the four Odos, so he could only find time to participate in the training of Ron's escort team. The result was a lack of tacit understanding among the three members of the escort team.

Even though the soldiers in the opposing battle formation were concerned about Art's face, they were also newly trained recruits and not masters of the battle formation. Even if they wanted to deliberately lose to the escort team, they couldn't grasp the scale. Therefore, the team of guards who did not cooperate tacitly were defeated one after another. Within a short time, Jason was stabbed by the opponent's main attacker and ended up on the field.

The three-man battle formation between Art and Ron became stronger. Although Art was more active in defense in order to make the competition fair, Ron, who was holding back his anger, raised his wooden shield and took advantage of the small number of people and flexibility to avoid the opponent's main attacker and directly detour to the right to assist his body. Next to him, he repeatedly poked the lower plate of the right assister, causing the opponent's formation to be disturbed. Ron raised his spear and hit the wooden shield of the opponent's main attacker. Ron, who was focused on attacking fiercely, did not notice that a long stick had been stabbed over from the left...

  ...

In the first round of the match, the third group just faced off for a while before the main attacker of the first group found an opening and stabbed the main attacker off the field. After losing the left assister, the guard team attacked the opponent bravely, but because Ron ignored the left wing protection, he was stabbed by the second assister and was defeated.

In the second round, the first group faced off against the second group. The two groups were evenly matched and fought hard on the field for a long time. But with the rapid loss of physical strength, the formation of the second group began to loosen. The two assisters obviously could not keep up with the pace of the main attacker, and the guards on both wings began to be exposed. The three Tuba people in the first group gritted their teeth and insisted on staying together. The main attacker noticed that the opponent's formation was loose, so he led the two assists and slammed into it. The formation of the second group was shattered...

Seeing that the guys from the second group who had fallen to the ground were being helped up by the soldiers from the first group, Art turned around and announced: "In the second three-person battle formation competition, the first group wins."

In the next third individual combat skills competition, Tuba, the big man in the first group who had the greatest hope of winning, failed to win the final victory. The first place in personal combat skills was won by Simon Kuntz, the lean man in the third group. I was very disappointed with this result. Art was not surprised. Simon Kunz was originally a professional bounty hunter in the south of Provence. He was hunted for killing a lord's second son. He had been wandering around the north of Provence, making a living by working as a guard for caravans and as a guild thug in the city.

On the evening of the end of the competition, Odo bought back half a fan of mutton, hired a cook from Tyniec, lit a bonfire in a corner of the station, set up an iron pot, and stewed a whole pot of mutton soup. Art also fulfilled his promise and brought back a thirty-pound barrel of light beer from the beer shop as a reward to the first group, and personally handed five pfennig copper coins to Simon in front of everyone.

The first group, under Otto's instruction, distributed large barrels of beer to the brothers in the patrol, so that every soldier in the patrol could grab a mutton with bones and meat in one hand and a full bowl of beer in the other, enjoying the rare leisure and indulgence after hard training.

The dinner lasted until midnight. After seeing that everyone was full and full, Art gathered all the officers and soldiers of the patrol team and sat down together around the bonfire. He stood by the bonfire and said loudly: "Everyone, it is God's will that brings us together. You have become soldiers of my Art, and you will also become my brothers. After half a month of hard training, you have mastered the most basic skills of a professional soldier. The time limit for our stationing in Tyniec has expired. Tomorrow we will set off to suppress bandits and improve security on the southern border. "

"Now I will officially confirm the current distribution of our soldiers, appoint officers, and determine their salaries."

"Before recruiting more soldiers to expand, the patrol team is divided into three levels: combat group, squad, and team. There are three soldiers in the combat group, with the three-person battle formation as the leader; the two combat groups are one squad, and the squad leader is also the leader of the first combat group; the two squads are one team, and I am the captain."

The patrol team organization announced by Yat is similar to the one in the previous military meeting. In the past half month, everyone's training has been basically based on the combat group, so it is not surprising.

"The first group of recruits was changed to the second combat group, with Tuba as the leader, and the second group of recruits was changed to the fourth combat group, with Simon as the leader. The first and third combat groups were selected by Bass and Kazzak respectively from the remaining soldiers, and Jason was incorporated into Bas's combat group."

At paused for a moment, allowing everyone to clarify the allocation of soldiers in detail.

"The first and second combat groups form the first team, and Bass serves as the team leader and the leader of the first combat team."

hh "The third and fourth combat groups form the second team, and Kazak serves as the team leader and the leader of the third combat team."

hh "Ron will be my personal bodyguard. He also serves as a sentry and receives the salary of a squad leader."

Everyone was quiet for a moment~

Bas and Kazak secretly turned their heads to glance at Odo. Everyone was surprised that Odo, the best, did not become the squad leader, but Odo looked as usual and was unmoved.

The answer to the mystery was soon revealed.

Atla said in a long voice: "Odo Fernand has performed the best since he followed me south, so I appointed him as the deputy captain of the patrol. He is responsible for training soldiers, managing military equipment, weapons and supplies, and enforcing military discipline..."

"In terms of salary, ordinary soldiers earn ten pfennigs per week, combat team leaders twelve pfennigs, squad leaders fifteen pfennigs, and deputy captains eighteen pfennigs."

During this period, Art asked for or purchased a batch of military supplies such as military boots, belts, felt blankets, and weapons such as daggers and broadswords, hand axes, hammers, and arrows that were exchanged by the defenders. He also purchased several slightly rough-made armed swords and several sets of armed clothing and leather armor through the arsenal manager. Therefore, in terms of weapons, ordinary soldiers are equipped with a black oak buckler, a six-and-a-half-foot short spear, and a black robe and cloak. Therefore, ordinary soldiers are also issued with a cowhide belt and a dagger (sword) with a wooden handle of about 13 inches. The combat team leader's weapon is based on the ordinary soldier's weapon and adds a short sword of about 18 inches or a tomahawk and hammer; the squad leader's weapon is based on the ordinary soldier's weapon and is added on a three-foot broadsword or armed sword and a set of armed clothing. Odo and Ron have one more piece of single-layer leather armor than other team captains.

In terms of odds and ends, all patrol soldiers each also have a set of tableware, a pair of leather boots, a water bladder, a sheepskin bag, a whetstone and other odds and ends. Each team is equipped with a military tent, and the whole team also has a carriage, two mules, one horse (purchased), and a batch of grain, wheat seeds and farm tools... Going south...

Viscount Pierre stood behind the wall stacks on the south city gate and looked at the backs of the group going south, and asked the captain of the guard beside him: "Did he really divide the patrol team into three levels?"

The captain of the guard replied: "Yes, sir, I arranged for someone to hear it personally next to their station last night~"

Pierre thought carefully about Art's team formation and muttered: "Art, are you a religious guard or a forest hunter? Or do you have other ulterior identities?..."
